Why is the topic of the modern horror movies mostly deadly boring?

A lot of these modern day horror films lack any type of storyline. They rely mostly on jump scenes and lots of gore, which is okay sometimes, but without a decent storyline, the movie gets very boring after awhile. Horror films from back in the day used to play off myths, legends and people's worst fears, whereas now some of the movie concepts come completely from left field and others are merely remakes (in which half of those are not up to par). Back in the 80s and early 90s, the stoner high school student & dumb, big breasted blonde slashers were cool, but seriously, how long can they continue making those films before they realize that moviegoers are getting bored with them?
